Two pounds last week! Booyah!
I've been getting a lot of positive feedback on our current message series, 'Friends on Facebook.' If you don't attend True North, we've been talking about how our online interactions and behaviors are changing how we think and act in real life. The NY Times has been publishing some great stuff on this topic lately. Here's another article REALLY worth reading if you suspect your internet activity might be compulsive. How are you doing with this? Are you justifying the amount of time you spend online? Are you telling yourself (and others) things like "I can quit any time." ? Read on. And ...
I've been doing a little ruminating on the life and death of Steve Jobs and it's only just now occurring to me how much this guy's work has impacted my life. Driving to work today, I listened to a podcast - a word added to our lexicon to describe spoken word content placed on iTunes to be downloaded to and played back on iPods. My iPhone is like an appendage to me. It keeps my contacts, my calendar and innumerable other apps and digital helpers. And when I write a sermon or an email, or a blog post like this ...
I recall an instance from several years ago while Jen and I were still living in our first home. I was in my kitchen and I heard a loud 'bang' followed by what appeared to be flashes of light seen through the front window. It was daytime so I knew it had to be a significant light source. I walked out of my house and saw a full size tractor-trailor about 4 doors down from me. The roof of the container had snagged an electrical wire which had snapped and now lay beneath the truck, sparking on the ...
I was woken up this morning at around 4:15 by the sound of my daughter gently crying as she entering my bedroom. She’s basically been in the pool non-stop since school got out and her dedication has yielded a painful case of swimmer’s ear. A couple of children’s Tylenol and a quick prayer got her settled back down, but I had an unusually hard time falling back asleep. It could have been that I was thirsty, or that my back was sore, or that I was hot and feeling angry at myself for not pushing my wife harder on ...
Ok, so I've gone public with my desire to drop some tonnage this year.
After much deliberation I decided to have a little convo with my man Roger Blackmore. Roger's the pastor of Church at the Movies, the author of a blog called 'Where's the Fat Guy?' and a Weight Watchers enthusiast.
In fact, he lost like 130 lbs. on the program.
No offense intended with the following statement, but I've always thought that weight watchers was a girl thing. And in truth, the meetings are 95% populated by those of the female species.
However, the dang program works.
I don't think I'll stay on it forever, but if it helps me reach my goals I'll stick with it.
To that end, I am going to be publishing my progress right here on The Right Thing.
Nothing like a couple hundred people keeping you accountable eh?
So, my goal: 52 lbs lost this year. I want to lose a pound a week in 2009. This is doable. It's a manageable goal and it still allows me to live life and not me a psychotic diet nazi, which I was never any good at being anyway. My affinity for cheeseburgers permits no pychosis.
So, progress so far?
My weight on January 5: 271.6 lbs.
My weight as of Monday: 266 lbs.
That's 5 lbs so far this year and it means I'm right on schedule. I'll post my weight each week so you peeps can scream at me if I get off track.
Thanks in advance for your prayers as I seek to glorify God with my body.
Peace.
This in an AMAZING video put out by the Honda corporation on success and failure.
The Church could learn a TON by watching this.
If you are in leadership in any capacity, or even if you're just someone who's struggled with failure, check it out and holla back.
Peace.
So, much to my dismay, I realized that I did some traveling recently and never updated my faithful The Right Thing readers on the BBQ scene in Orlando.
For new readers, I (along with several other True North peoples) am becoming somewhat of a Bar-B-Cue connoisseur, and I never miss a chance to check out the good stuff in whatever town I happen to be in.
Last month, it was Orlando. Much thanks to my Urban Spoon iPhone app and my GPS, I came across this little gem in Kissimmee. Seriously? Come one. With a name like Fat Boys Real Pit BBQ, it's gotta be amazing right?
True.
One look at the picnic bench decor and I knew I had a winner.
And these things?
Yeah. Those are cattle brands from local ranches. You would NEVER see something like this north of the Mason Dixon line. Amazing!
Here's a cover shot of the menu, with address in case you're ever local.
BBQ Sauce lineup looks like this:
And the chow? Really really good. $14 got me a dinner sampler that allowed me to try the best of their menu. Check this out:
That's beef brisket, a BBQ chicken breast, three ribs and "sloppy" pork (as opposed to sliced), along with fries, slaw and two (count 'em two!) huge pieces of garlic bread.
Brisket and Ribs were average, and the Chicken was really good. But the sloppy pork? Absolutely amazing. Like, some of the best I've had.
And I got out of there for $20, sweet tea, tax and tip included. Ridiculous.
And just as an added bonus, this was mounted over the salad bar:
This BBQ was good enough to warrant a trip from anywhere with an hour's radius and I'm definitely making plans to hit it again when I'm in Orlando for the Exponential Conference this Spring (for which our Worship Team is the house band, by the way. Woot!).
Do likewise, loved ones.
It is the Right Thing.
Peace.
